Common Residential Electrical Upgrades

Often home projects occur that create interest in some electrical upgrades. You become new Parents or Grand Parents, you're about to paint a bathroom, or maybe you bought a new big screen TV at Costco. All of these things create another need.

A GFCI or a new circuit in the Bathroom so the hair dryer won't trip the circuit anymore, Smoke Detectors throughout the house to protect the Grand Children or adding Surge Protection for electronic devices are all good upgrades. When I purchased my home 30 years ago I replaced all the plugs and switches. The reason was we were painting the whole house, they were already 25 years old (their expected life) and they had previously been painted over. This is a simple and inexpensive upgrade. We also installed at this same time GFCI'S in the bathrooms and kitchen and some, (new at the time-1979), recessed lighting.

When thinking about upgrades consider the age of your home and what appliances were available at that time. In the past 50 years we have added to our homes the following;

Central Air Conditioning, Microwave Ovens, Bread Makers, Deep Fryers, Ice Makers, Instant hot water dispensers, Computers, a TV in every room, Stereo Systems, Hot Tubs, Toaster Ovens, Garage Door Openers, Heated Bathroom Floors, Hair Dryers and many more. Did you ever consider adding Circuits for your new purchases?
